Dutch health insurance 2027: find what you really pay in your bank statement
Every autumn people in the Netherlands compare health insurance on the premium. Few know what they actually pay now. Your premium is in your policy. What it really cost you in a year is in your bank statement: the premium, your extra cover and the eigen risico (deductible) you paid.
With that number you compare fairly. Here is how to find it in a few minutes.
The dates for 2027
| When | What |
|---|---|
| By 12 November 2026 | All insurers publish their premiums and conditions for 2027. |
| By 31 December 2026 | Cancel your current health insurance. If you take out a new one before 31 December, your new insurer cancels the old one for you. |
| By 1 February 2027 | Take out a new health insurance. You are then insured from 1 January. |
The compulsory eigen risico goes to €400 in 2027 (€385 in 2026), according to the Consumentenbond.
What to look for in your statement
| Item | What it looks like |
|---|---|
| Basic premium | A direct debit from your insurer every month, always the same amount. |
| Extra cover (aanvullend) | Often in the same direct debit, sometimes a separate one. Your policy shows which part is extra. |
| Eigen risico | Irregular debits from your insurer after you had care, sometimes in instalments. |
| What wasn't covered | Bills from the dentist, physio or pharmacy you paid yourself. |
Find it in 5 minutes
- Download your transactions for the last 12 months. How to, per bank.
- Search for your insurer's name.
- Add up the fixed monthly amounts: that is your premium per year, extra cover included.
- Add up the other debits from your insurer: that is what you paid in eigen risico.
- Add the care bills you paid yourself. That total is what care really cost you.
Then compare
Compare from 12 November, once all 2027 premiums are out. The Consumentenbond comparison tool (in Dutch) also puts the extra cover packages side by side.
- Hardly paid any eigen risico? A higher voluntary eigen risico can lower your premium. You do pay more if you suddenly need care.
- Didn't use your extra cover? Compare what you got out of it with what it cost.
- Switching? Take out the new insurance before 31 December and you don't have to cancel anything yourself.
